Steampunk movies are great resources in terms of discovering the very core of this culture and implementing it in the personal style.

1. The City of the Lost Children

The action takes place in 1995, transposing a science fantasy drama with French, German and Spanish influences. The plot introduces the viewer into the life of a scientist who lives in a surrealist society. His purpose is to find a cure that can slow the aging process. To achieve his darkest desires he kidnaps children. The movie is a great source of inspiration in terms of steampunk goggles. Another surprising aspect about this film is that it has a very interesting background. The main character, Ron Perlman, had to learn the lines phonetically as he is an American actor with no knowledge of the French language.

2. 9

9 is a movie produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. The viewer will discover a post-apocalyptic world with lots of steampunk influences. The plot is quite simple. The key to humanity salvation is held by a rag doll that miraculously comes to life. It is an interesting animation, starring the voices of Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Elijah Wood and John C. Reilly. The director, Shane Acker, managed to mix perfectly satire with SF.

3. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

The renowned 16th president of the United States of America is the main character of this science fiction movie. The plot finds Abraham Lincoln in a fight between humans and vampires, where the latter want to take over US. As the action takes place in Victorian times, the viewers can find their inspiration in terms of steampunk hats.

4. Going postal

Going postal is the best example of steampunk comedy. The lead actor, who is a con artist, finds himself in the position of becoming Postmaster General.

He gets himself into some really funny situations that are a delight for the viewer.

5. Atlantis: The lost empire

Everyone knows the story of Atlantis. This movie takes Milo Thather into the journey of his lifetime. He submerges together with his crew the dangerous waters in a submarine in search of the mysterious city. Even though it is an animation, the viewer will feel the struggle and dangers that he needs to overcome along the way. Furthermore, for those who are creative, it is a great place to find inspiration in terms of steampunk accessories.

6. Hugo

Hugo is a fantasy drama from 2011. The movie reveals the story of an orphan who lives in a train station. The action takes place in Paris in 1930 and it is based on the famous novel of Brian Selznick, The Invention of Hugo Cabret. The SF aspects of the movie rely on the presence of the late father and the way steel comes to life.

7. Steam Boy

This is another great animation Steampunk movie that takes the viewer back in Britain’s 1860. The main character is a boy who plays the role of an inventor. His innovative ideas represent a threat for the steam industry.

8. Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa

Conqueror of Shamballa is actually a sequel of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series. The story line belongs to Sho Aikawa and the plot is directed by Seiji Mizushima.  The animation tells the story of Edward Elric and his younger brother Alphonse. The former lives in a parallel universe of Earth and wants to get back home. The struggles both characters face will make the viewer enjoy every second of this film.

Wild Wild West is a steampunk movie where Will Smith gets to use all sort of futuristic gadgets and innovative engineering. 18. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

While the most popular version of 20,000 Leagues under the sea is from 2004, it is important to watch the 1954 original version to actually feel the steampunk effect. The whole action takes place in a submarine that runs on alternative power and discovers the world under the sea. Some even describe the movie as the better version of Moby Dick with steampunk effects.

    I read Going Postal, but I didn’t know they’d made a movie of it! I’ve seen the rest of these, but now I must go hunt down that one ASAP 🙂
